Israeli military surrounds Gaza City, officials say
The Israeli military encircled densely populated Gaza City late Monday as the death toll topped 500. Friendly fire also killed three Israeli troops in an explosion in northern Gaza, military officials say.

Hundreds in Afghanistan protest Gaza incursion
Hundreds of people in southern Afghanistan have burned Israeli flags and shouted anti-Israel and anti-American slogans to protest Israel's military action in Gaza, according to eyewitness accounts from a CNN stringer.
Union City Elementary School's Voices of UCES performed recently at the Obion County Chimes for Charity telethon. The telethon was staged at Second Baptist Church to raise money for Chimes, which donates food, clothing and toys to needy children and their families during the Christmas holiday.

The University of Tennessee at Martin men’s basketball team will open the 2009 portion of its schedule in the friendly confines of the Kathleen and Tom Elam Center and Skyhawk Arena with three Ohio Valley Conference games this week.
Up first for the Skyhawks will be archrival Murray State. Tipoff is set for 7:30 this evening with a women’s game preceding the men’s action at 5:30.

Skyhawk assistant takes job at UTC MARTIN — Marcus Satter-field, UT Martin’s associate head football coach, quarterbacks and receivers coach and passing game coordinator this past season, has been named the offensive coordinator at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.
Satterfield accepted the job Wednesday night and will be introduced this afternoon at a press conference with the rest of Chattanooga head coach Russ Huesman’s new staff.

Skyhawk Hudson hits high mark in drubbing of Central Arkansas CONWAY, Ark. — Last season, Lester Hudson totaled his second-lowest point output of the season, scoring just 13 points in a 78-75 defeat.
On Wednesday, the senior guard from Memphis perhaps got his vengeance on the Bears, scoring a career-high 41 points and grabbing 10 rebounds, in an 84-65 Skyhawk victory at the Farris Center.
The win was the Skyhawks’ fifth straight, as they improve to 7-5 on the season.
